Tucked away on Ormond Road (between Nandos and the cinema!) is the Richmond and Putney Unitarian Church, built in 1896. It’s a lovely, peaceful space inside, with an airy feel, great acoustics and beautiful stained glass by none other than Edward Burne-Jones (colleague of William Morris). But did you know that as well as its Sunday services (friendly and completely inclusive), its community groups and nursery, it hosts a wealth of musical activities? It has its own opera company: Ormond Opera, a small professional group producing outstanding operas, such as Madame Butterfly (2016) and Carmen (2017); it is home to Richmond Choral Society, who hold their termly concerts there (their next one is music for Easter by Gounod and Lauridsen, on March 24th http://www.richmondchoralsociety.com/future-performances/ and contemporary music gets a look in too: the Richmond New Music Collective holds their annual showcases there. Two music events coming up are a lecture-recital exploring the piano works of Liszt (with fabulous pianist Mengyang Pan) on March 10th, and a stunning evening of song on March 16th from Philomel, a professional vocal ensemble performing music from the Renaissance and the present day.
